How to Pray the Rosary: A Step-by-Step Guide

The Rosary is one of the most cherished prayers in the Catholic Church. It’s a powerful tool for meditation, spiritual growth, and drawing closer to Christ through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. If you're new to the Rosary or want to deepen your understanding of this beautiful prayer, this guide will walk you through each step, offering insights and tips to make your experience fruitful and meaningful.

What Is the Rosary?

The Rosary is both a prayer and a physical object used to aid in prayer. It consists of a series of prayers, including the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be, organized into five decades. Each decade focuses on a specific mystery from the life of Jesus and Mary, providing a framework for meditating on the Gospel.

The Rosary has been a cornerstone of Catholic devotion for centuries, often referred to as a "spiritual weapon" against evil. Pope John Paul II called it "a prayer of great significance, destined to bring forth a harvest of holiness."

Here at West Coast Catholic we love and adore the Rosary because it helps draw us closer to Jesus. Our Rosaries are all hand beaded and designed intentionally with different Bible stories, locations and historical events in mind.

The Structure of the Rosary

Before diving into how to pray the Rosary, it’s helpful to understand its structure:

  1. The Cross: Where you begin with the Sign of the Cross and the Apostles' Creed.

  2. The Introductory Beads: One Our Father, three Hail Marys (for faith, hope, and charity), and one Glory Be.

  3. The Decades: Each decade consists of one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and one Glory Be. You also announce and meditate on a mystery for each decade.

  4. The Closing Prayers: The Hail, Holy Queen and optional concluding prayers, like the Rosary Prayer or other Marian prayers.

How to Pray the Rosary

Let’s walk through the steps of praying the Rosary. If you have a physical Rosary, keep it handy. If not, you can count on your fingers or use a Rosary app such as Hallow.

Step 1: Begin with the Sign of the Cross

Start by holding the crucifix on the Rosary. Make the Sign of the Cross:

"In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."

This simple gesture reminds us of our baptism and invites God’s presence into our prayer time.

Step 2: Pray the Apostles' Creed

While still holding the crucifix, recite the Apostles' Creed. This ancient prayer summarizes the core beliefs of the Catholic faith:

"I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended into hell;
on the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting. Amen."

Step 3: Pray the Introductory Prayers

Move to the first bead above the crucifix. Pray one Our Father, which Jesus taught us:

"Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen."

On the next three beads, pray three Hail Marys. These are traditionally offered for the virtues of faith, hope, and charity. Conclude this section with a Glory Be:

"Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen."

Step 4: Announce the First Mystery

The Rosary is divided into four sets of mysteries: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious. Each set contains five mysteries. Traditionally, different mysteries are prayed on specific days of the week:

  • Joyful Mysteries (Monday, Saturday)

  • Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesday, Friday)

  • Glorious Mysteries (Wednesday, Sunday)

  • Luminous Mysteries (Thursday)

Announce the first mystery aloud or silently. For example, if you’re praying the Joyful Mysteries, the first is "The Annunciation."

The full list of mysteries can be found below for each decade.

Step 5: Pray the Decade

On the next large bead, pray one Our Father. Then, on each of the ten smaller beads, pray a Hail Mary while meditating on the mystery. Conclude the decade with a Glory Be and the Fatima Prayer:

*"O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy."

Step 6: Repeat for the Remaining Mysteries

Continue this pattern for all five decades, meditating on a different mystery each time. Allow the mysteries to guide your thoughts and prayer intentions, drawing you deeper into the life of Christ and Mary.

Step 7: Conclude with Closing Prayers

After completing the five decades, pray the Hail, Holy Queen:

"Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this, our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen."

You can also add the Rosary Prayer:

"O God,
whose only begotten Son,
by His life, death, and resurrection,
has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life,
grant, we beseech Thee,
that by meditating upon these mysteries
of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
we may imitate what they contain
and obtain what they promise,
through the same Christ our Lord. Amen."

Finally, make the Sign of the Cross to end your prayer.
